Hello friends.

Thanks for coming back 😀 We’ve been traveling happily along my holiday itinerary and when last you were here, I was still in Australia. But now, this particular post, is a wee bit of a conundrum. Why? Because Aussies claim this desert as their own and New Zealander’s beg to differ !

Who really invented Pavlova?

I say, it would depend on who’s serving desert and it’s always polite to flatter your host or hostess, as it may be  😀

This spoilt gal got to enjoy Pavlova in both countries. First in Australia’s beautiful Blue Mountains at the wonderfully located Boiler House restaurant.

Looks pretty right? I totally enjoyed the fruit, drizzle and custard.  But the base is a very hard shell of meringue and I never did figure it out. Maybe you’re not really suppose to eat it? I pictured it flying off my plate if I attempted to put a fork into it with any force. Inexplicably, these crazy meal-time antics horrors calamities sometimes happen to me. BTW, how many drinks have you spilt while dining with friends?

As you know, following my trip to Australia, I went on to join the other ‘Blogger Babes’, Laurie, Alys and Pauline in New Zealand.  A lovely term of self endearment isn’t it? LOL !

Our charming hostesses, Pauline and her girls, treated us to so many fantastic adventures including a week in Wanaka, New Zealand’s adventure capital (future posts).  But it all began with a beautiful evening at Pauline’s home. After a really scrumptious meal, along came THE famous Pavlova !

Is it possible that desert can taste better when served with love and a smile?

Needless to say, it was perfect in every way. The desert, the company and the entire evening is a delicious memory.  Since I have friends in both countries, I’ll refrain from weighing in on the age-old debate, “who made Pavlova first?” But I will say, desert is best when shared with those you love.

I have yet another alternate theory to offer about the origins of the Pavlova: It was brought to Earth by winged cherubs and bestowed upon only the hippest, sweetest ladies on each continent. 🙂 I did laugh (with you) at your fears of tableside calamities, though. As a serial drink-spiller and food-dropper, I would have been intimidated by that beautiful little dessert too. In that sense, the cake looks a bit more manageable — at least I know what the major parts are, and which implements to poke them with, ha ha. Thank you for a delightful and drool-inducing distraction from the daily grind. xx

    1. Well now, I love your theory ! 😀 From one serial drink spiller to another, I really think they should make bibs for grown ups. Maybe there’s a market for them? Snap! I might have stumbled on to a million dollar idea? You in? LOL….who am I kidding, I like retirement too much to entertain that notion. Feel free to run with it though. LOL.
      Here’s a laundry tip, my Aunty Kathleen shared it with me, her nail lady told her and now I’m telling you (to heck with Facebook, we can manage just fine on our own). I digress, laundry tip, yah…put Ivory dish soap on potential stain (borsch, chocolate, ketchup and anything that ended up on you instead of your tummy), gently suds up the spot with a bit of water and let soak in cold water over night. Next day, launder as usual and Zappo….no stain! I have saved 3 garments in two weeks. BTW, Borsch is a beat soap…deadly but delicious.

      1. Does that Ivory dish soap really work?! I hope so … because as a big fan of dark chocolate, beets, ketchup, turmeric and cherries, half my wardrobe will soon be soaking in Ivory dish soap. 🙂 Oh! And about those adult bibs: Genius idea! We could make them in elegant paisley prints and call them “dining ties” or “dining scarves.” Or maybe “nosh pits” for the under-30 set. Ha ha.

        1. Omgosh ! You are a marketing genius 😀 Dining scarves ! That’s hot (say it like Paris Hilton 10 years ago) LOL The Ivory dish soap worked on beet soup and chocolate really well !! I don’t know about stains that have already been laundered though. I think the dryer pretty much sets them in for life. But from this day forward, you’ll sparkle (more than usual) x K

    I hand’t realized before that a great debate existed. I’m glad Amanda added information to the mix. It’s a wonder we know anything given how difficult it was to record things prior to the printing press.

    I love reading Boomdee posts. It makes me nostalgic for our early days of posting and sharing here. Who knew we would end up good friends, travel buddies, Blogger Babes and the like. I’m so excited for your October visit. I can hardly wait. xo

      I also get nostalgic for the days of multiple posts per month. But living in the City has also given me the gift of time. Time to enjoy so many things. Like having my own craft room, LOL. High Speed Internet helps me participate in fun groups that span the globe. Breakfast and Lunch dates with pals and a little yard to nurture rather than slave over.
      WordPress continues to bring a lot of love my way. While you don’t see new posts here often, I still enjoy reading lot’s of friends out there. l can’t wait for our visit too!   3. A lovely photo of Pauline serving a fabulous pavlova. It’s a great dessert to share. But although New Zealand may have first rights on Pavlova, it is a dessert with its origins in Europe. It was originally called a Schaum Torte and went from Germany to the US before coming to either Australia or NZ.     1. Hello sweet Clowie! They are a really pretty desert for sure. Pauline’s desert had a softer base that was delicious. I’ve only put meringue ON TOP of a lemon pie (once, LOL) and it seems to me it baked more marshmellow’y. It’s always nice to have a few bites of something sweet with a nice coffee at the end of dinner where ever you are 😀 Cheers and thanks so much for your message! ❤

  5. I had to get here by clicking the like button because the other ways sent me to an “oops, that page is missing” note. I love those deserts and that’s kind of what I had on my last birthday and also on my daughter’s birthday. The meringue is egg white and sugar whipped and it’s my favorite dessert. I plan to order a whole cake this year because there will be at least 8 eating it. I’m really not good at sharing it. Maybe I’ll order 2 cakes. 😉 I think many countries have their own version of this but one thing you are absolutely correct about. It always tastes better with friends. Have I ever spilled a drink? Not on your life. Lots of other things but never, ever a drink.;) I’m quite serious about my drinking. 😉 Now I’ll pop over to your scrap page. It’s almost too hot to sit here any longer though.

    1. OMgosh, that made me laugh ! Never spilt a drink hey? Well you are far more coordinated than I. I blame it on my vision LOL 😀 I think I told you once maybe, but I’m a mono-fixator. Meaning I only use one eye at a time. My eye’s don’t bonoculi, so things are someone mis-judged depending on how close or how far they are away. So blah blah blah, and oopsie-daisy 😀

      1. I’m one eyed too. 😉 Only the left sees and the two stopped tracking together when the bells hit. I’d tip myself over before I’d spill a drink. Somehow I don’t need to see to keep the drink upright but can’t do it for myself. We would be a pair at a party for sure. :)))) Laughing hard at the thought.

  6. Yum! I’ve had a Pavlova here! But I think you’re right, it’s likely best eaten in good company. I thought the base was egg white whipped with sugar and baked. Goodness, what’s that called? Great picture of Pauline serving up dessert. She looks fab in it.

    1. Hello there Ms Arlington 😀 Yes the base of the desert is a type of Meringue. Whipped at high speed, egg whites with sugar, till it’s spun into a glossy confection that when baked is really hard. Paulines was different, softer and delish. Pauline is so stylish and it seems quite effortless. 😀 xo
